On September 11, 2019, Evewoman.co.ke published an article highlighting the importance of physiotherapy and counselling for patients with Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) and Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Mukami, a patient with NMO, shares her personal experience of struggling to come to terms with her diagnosis. When she first researched her condition, she was shocked to read that it was incurable. Her initial reaction was to deny the reality of her situation, but as the symptoms progressed, she found herself sinking into depression.

With the help of counselling, a supportive husband, and loving friends, Mukami has been able to manage her depression and find ways to cope with her condition. Laura, a founding chairperson of Multiple Sclerosis Kenya (MS Kenya), emphasizes the importance of surrounding oneself with a team of healthcare professionals, including a neurologist, physiotherapist, and counsellor.

Dennis Ratemo, a physiotherapist specializing in neurological illnesses, stresses the crucial role of physiotherapy in helping patients with MS and NMO maintain some level of mobility and independence.

Catherine Chigiti, a counselling psychologist who works with MS and NMO patients, notes that the psychological impact of these conditions can be significant, affecting relationships with family and friends. She recommends seeking counselling to manage mental health and maintain healthy relationships.

Patients with NMO and MS can reach out to MS Kenya, a non-profit organization that provides support and advocacy, through their website and social media channels.
