On September 11, 2019, a disturbing incident occurred in Kangaru Village, Embu County, where a senior police officer opened fire on a moving matatu carrying passengers.
The officer had waved at the driver to stop the vehicle so they could inspect it, but the driver ignored the sign and continued with his journey.
When the driver failed to stop, one of the senior police officers, who was armed, took the initiative to spray the public service vehicle with uncounted bullets.
After the bullets spree, the officers at the roadblock pulled out the matatu driver from the vehicle and rushed him to the Embu Referral Hospital for treatment.
The officers allegedly defended themselves, stating that they were on the hunt for criminals and that's why they took the action to stop the vehicle for inspection.
A witness at the scene, Mary Kagen, stated that the police officers wanted to inspect whether the vehicle was carrying criminals amongst the passengers and the driver failed to stop, which forced the police to act by shooting him to stop the vehicle.
Embu County Police Commander, Daniel Rukunga, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations will be done.
