On September 11, 2019, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) issued a stern warning to Kenyans regarding the mistreatment of animals, particularly chickens.
According to a notice posted on the DCI's Twitter handle, individuals found guilty of cruelty to animals risk facing a fine of up to Sh3,000 or a prison sentence of up to six months, or both.
The warning primarily targeted traders transporting chickens and animals in cars and motorcycles to and from the market.
DCI cited the Prevention of Cruelty To Animals Act (Cap.360) Revised Edition 2012 (1983), which states that a person shall be guilty of an offense of cruelty if they cruelly beat, kick, ill-treat, over-ride, over-drive, over-load, torture, infuriate, or terrify any animal.
