On September 10, 2019, the Kirinyaga County Assembly made headlines by rejecting the Punguza Mizigo Bill, a proposal tabled by Thirdway Alliance Party leader Ekuru Aukot.
The Bill, which aimed to reduce the financial burden on citizens, was tabled by Majority Leader Kamau Murango, but it failed to gain traction due to a procedural motion that was deemed invalid.
According to House Standing Orders, a Bill without a seconder is suspended for six months, and it must be re-tabled in the Assembly. This technicality led to the Bill's rejection.
Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru praised the Assembly's decision, stating that the Punguza Mizigo Bill was 'detrimental to our people.'
However, a section of MCAs led by John Bapstist Kanga argued that the governor should not celebrate, as the Bill can be re-introduced before the six-month suspension period lapses.
