On September 10, 2019, Tetra Pak, a leading food packaging maker, announced a significant partnership with two recycling firms, Ecotech and Ramani recyclers, to transform used packaging material into compressed paperboards.
The partnership aims to establish a waste paper collection plan where customers will drop the used Tetra Pak material into bins placed in selected retail stores.
According to Jonathan Kinisu, Tetra Pak's chief executive, the used packaging materials will be received by the recycling firms and transformed into a ready raw material for compressed paperboards, which will be used in making domestic and office furniture.
This initiative is part of the growing awareness among Kenyan firms to recycle materials used in packaging of goods, following the government's efforts to conserve the environment by banning the use of plastic bags in 2017.
Recycling not only helps to conserve the environment but also reduces the raw material costs for producing firms, thus improving their margins.
