On September 10, 2019, a Nanyuki court made a significant ruling in a case involving Keroche Breweries and its CEO, Tabitha Karanja.
Principal Magistrate Njeri Thuku accepted an application by Ms. Karanja to have her name removed as a second respondent in the case, citing that the charges had progressed for three years without her being tried.
Special prosecutor John Maina, representing the Weights and Measures Department, had recommended the removal of Ms. Karanja's name from the charge sheet, stating that it would be inappropriate to charge her as the company's executive director and the firm concurrently.
Initially, the prosecution had sought to charge Ms. Karanja alongside her Nanyuki-based beer distributor, Grace Wanjiru, and Keroche as an entity, after they were allegedly found with Viena Ice pre-packed liquor in Nanyuki town on September 30, 2015.
