On September 10, 2019, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) made a significant decision regarding the upcoming Kibra by-election.
McDonald Mariga, a former Kenyan international footballer, was disqualified from contesting in the election due to his name not being found in the 2017 voters register.
Mariga had been cleared by the Jubilee Party to vie for the Kibra Parliamentary seat after scoring 500 out of 600 marks in the interview with the party's National Elections Board.
However, the IEBC cited that Mariga's name could not be found in the 2017 voters register, which led to his disqualification.
Mariga has since announced that he will appeal the decision at the IEBC Disputes Resolutions Tribunal, stating, “I am a registered voter, I don’t know why they can’t find my name.”
The Kibra MP seat has attracted a number of candidates from various parties, including Eliud Owalo, who was unveiled as the Amani National Congress (ANC) party's candidate, and Eng. Khamisi Butichi, who will fly the Ford Kenya party's flag.
