Ronald Karauri Abandons ODM Ticket, Declares Independent Bid for Nairobi Governor

Kasarani Member of Parliament Ronald Karauri has shifted his political strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election, declaring that he will pursue the Nairobi gubernatorial seat as an independent candidate rather than depend on party tickets to secure his political ambitions.

Karauri says political party colours matter less than a candidate's message, connection with voters and ability to present practical development plans. He believes Nairobi residents should judge leaders based on their ideas, leadership record and capacity to address the city's persistent problems rather than the political parties they represent.

His declaration comes just days after Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja officially abandoned the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), setting the stage for a fresh political contest over the capital's leadership.

Karauri's independent bid will test whether personal popularity, corporate experience and grassroots connections can overcome established party machinery in Nairobi's increasingly competitive 2027 gubernatorial contest.

Sakaja's ODM Move Changes Nairobi Political Calculations

Karauri had previously indicated that he was interested in pursuing the ODM ticket for the Nairobi governor race, with the party emerging as an attractive political vehicle for several aspirants seeking to challenge or replace the incumbent.

The lawmaker had openly expressed interest in joining the Orange party, which enjoys an established political network in Nairobi and maintains a significant presence in the city's political structures. However, Sakaja made the first move, officially joining ODM on November 2, 2026, after weeks of speculation about his political future.

The governor was received at Chungwa House by senior ODM officials, including Deputy Party Leader Simba Arati and National Chairperson Gladys Wanga. His entry into the party immediately introduced another dimension to the contest for the ODM gubernatorial ticket.

Sakaja's arrival also complicated the political calculations for aspirants who had been considering the party as their preferred route to City Hall. Makadara MP George Aladwa, among the politicians interested in the seat, also faces the prospect of competing for the party's nomination.

ODM's influence in Nairobi, its representation in the County Assembly and its working relationship with President William Ruto's broad-based administration have made it an attractive political platform for politicians seeking to consolidate their influence in the capital.

But with the governor now inside the Orange party, Karauri appears to have reconsidered his options rather than enter an increasingly competitive nomination contest.

Karauri Returns to the Independent Political Route

The Kasarani MP is now looking to replicate the political formula that took him to Parliament in 2022, when he successfully contested and won the seat as an independent candidate.

His latest position suggests that he wants to build his gubernatorial campaign around his personal appeal, development agenda and direct engagement with Nairobi residents rather than rely on the machinery of an established political party.

Karauri's argument challenges the assumption that a popular political party automatically gives an aspirant an advantage in an election. He is positioning himself as a candidate whose appeal should be measured by what he offers Nairobi residents rather than the political colours he wears.

However, running independently for governor presents a different set of challenges from contesting a parliamentary seat. Nairobi is a politically diverse county with 17 constituencies, 85 electoral wards and a complex network of political interests.

An independent campaign would require Karauri to establish structures across the entire county, mobilise supporters in different communities and build a strong grassroots organisation capable of competing with candidates backed by established political parties.

The question is whether his personal networks and political experience can provide the reach and organisational capacity required for a countywide campaign.

SportPesa Experience and Youth Connections Shape Karauri's Bid

Karauri is betting on direct engagement with voters, arguing that their concerns, aspirations and development needs matter more than political party colours.

Karauri enters the gubernatorial contest with a background that combines corporate leadership, sports business and parliamentary politics.

Before becoming Kasarani MP, he built his public profile through SportPesa, where he served as chief executive, developing connections across Kenya's sports industry, business community and youth networks.

SportPesa's visibility in football and other sporting activities gave Karauri exposure beyond traditional political circles. His association with the brand also helped establish connections with young people, sports enthusiasts and communities that form an important part of Nairobi's population.

His corporate experience is another aspect he is likely to place at the centre of his campaign, particularly as he seeks to present himself as a leader capable of approaching county administration through planning, management and practical solutions.

However, running a county government requires more than corporate experience and public visibility. The Nairobi governor's office comes with significant responsibilities involving transport, housing, healthcare, waste management, infrastructure, revenue collection and delivery of essential services.

Karauri will therefore need to translate his business experience and political connections into a detailed development programme that addresses the daily challenges facing residents.

Government Alignment Adds Another Political Dimension

Although Karauri is leaning towards an independent candidature at the county level, he has made it clear that his national political alignment remains on the government side.

This distinction adds another dimension to his political positioning ahead of 2027. It suggests that he is separating his preferred political approach to Nairobi leadership from his broader national political alignment.

Sakaja's entry into ODM has also demonstrated how party affiliations are shifting within the broad-based government arrangement, with politicians navigating different political platforms while maintaining relationships with the national administration.

For Karauri, the immediate challenge will be convincing Nairobi residents that an independent candidate can build the political organisation and alliances needed to govern Kenya's capital.

His decision has reopened the question of whether Nairobi's next governor will emerge through established party structures or an independent political movement built around an individual candidate.

With the 2027 election approaching, Karauri is betting on his personal networks, development message, and previous electoral experience. Whether that formula can carry him from Kasarani to City Hall remains one of the emerging questions in Nairobi's evolving gubernatorial contest.
