Aga Khan University Hospital staff have reported unexplained salary deductions linked to a MEDITECH system failure.

Hundreds of employees at Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, have been affected by unexplained salary deductions linked to a reported failure of the Meditech system, turning an internal technology problem into a financial dispute involving workers across the hospital’s network of satellite clinics and its main campus.

The matter has drawn attention to the hospital’s payroll management, the technology supporting its operations and the decisions made by senior management over the system.

The complaint, submitted to NyakundiReport by insiders familiar with the matter, points to deductions ranging from Ksh 5,000 to Ksh 30,000, with cashier desk staff bearing much of the reported financial impact.

Staff at various satellite clinics and some departments at the main campus are also said to have been affected, with the number of employees impacted estimated at more than 500.

At the centre of the dispute is MEDITECH Expanse, an electronic health record (EHR) and hospital information management system used by Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, to digitise patient records, coordinate clinical workflows and manage hospital information.

The platform was introduced across Aga Khan Health Services’ hospitals and outreach medical centres in Kenya following a major implementation launched in 2022, making it an integral part of the hospital network’s operations.

According to sources, the problem stems from the continued use of the system without an upgrade, with the hospital CEO accused of being unwilling to approve the necessary changes despite the financial consequences for employees.

The complaint also points to the role of the hospital’s new manager, Jyoti Shah, whom the source identifies as a central figure in the matter.

The reported deductions have left employees bearing the financial consequences of a technical problem they say originated from the hospital’s systems, raising questions about how the affected payroll entries were generated, who authorized the deductions and what measures management has taken to return the money.

Hospital management is now being called upon to establish the cause of the Meditech failure, explain the deductions imposed on staff and clarify the responsibility of those overseeing the system and payroll administration.

Employees affected by the deductions also need a clear explanation of how the amounts were calculated and when the money will be reimbursed.

"Hi Nyakundi. Aga Khan Hospital staff, especially those at the cashier desks, have had a lot of money deducted because of a system failure caused by Meditech, a system the CEO doesn't want to upgrade. More than 500 people have been affected, with deductions ranging from Ksh 5,000 to Ksh 30,000 across all satellite clinics and some in the main campus. The new manager, Jyoti Shah, is the mastermind behind this."
