Ronald Karauri’s interest in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket has introduced a fresh political battle into Nairobi’s 2027 gubernatorial race, potentially complicating Governor Johnson Sakaja’s re-election calculations and exposing the growing scramble for the party’s influential political machinery.
The Kasarani Member of Parliament, elected on an independent ticket in 2022, has openly declared his interest in securing ODM’s nomination, despite not having formally joined the party. His ambition places him in a politically interesting position because Sakaja, who was elected governor on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, is also believed to be interested in using ODM’s political network to defend his seat.
For Karauri, the ODM ticket could provide something his independent political identity cannot easily guarantee across Nairobi. For Sakaja, the same party represents a potentially important political lifeline as he faces mounting questions about his administration and prospects for another term.
ODM Emerges as the Biggest Prize in Nairobi's 2027 Governor Contest ¶
Karauri made his intentions known during an interview with Alex Mwakideu in a podcast uploaded on YouTube on October 29, 2026, where he distanced himself from assumptions that he was preparing to contest under UDA.
“I am not the UDA candidate yet. In fact, the party I am looking at is ODM. We are waiting to see what happens around that. Natafuta hiyo ticket ya ODM, wacha tuone vile kutakuwa,” he said.
The statement signals that the SportPesa chief executive understands the importance of political organisation in a city where winning the governorship requires more than personal popularity and financial resources.
ODM remains one of the most deeply established political parties in Nairobi, with an extensive grassroots network and a significant presence in the county assembly. The party currently commands a majority in the Nairobi County Assembly, giving its political machinery considerable influence over local political mobilisation.
That makes its gubernatorial ticket an attractive prize for contenders seeking to challenge Sakaja in 2027.
Karauri has already demonstrated that he can mount a competitive political campaign. In the 2022 General Election, he secured the Kasarani parliamentary seat as an independent candidate, polling 32,406 votes against John Njoroge's 30,444.
However, winning Kasarani is considerably different from capturing Nairobi County, which requires building political alliances across constituencies, wards and diverse voting blocs.
ODM offers an established platform for that expansion.
The party's political calculations have also changed following Babu Owino's departure to establish his own political outfit. The Embakasi East MP had previously been one of ODM's most recognisable political figures in Nairobi, and his exit creates an opportunity for other ambitious politicians to position themselves within the party.
Sakaja's ODM Dilemma and the Battle for Political Survival ¶
Perhaps the most interesting dimension of Karauri's declaration is what it means for Sakaja.
The governor was elected in 2022 on a UDA ticket, but the political environment ahead of the next election has created incentives for him to reconsider his political alliances.
ODM's influence in Nairobi makes it an attractive vehicle for any contender seeking to consolidate support from the government-aligned political establishment.
Sakaja would therefore face an uncomfortable political situation if he attempted to secure the same ODM ticket being pursued by Karauri.
The governor would not only have to convince party leaders that he deserves another opportunity but also contend with aspirants who are already positioning themselves for the nomination.
Karauri's interest could turn the ODM nomination into an early political battleground, particularly if influential party figures decide that a fresh candidate offers better electoral prospects than an incumbent facing criticism over his administration.
The question is whether ODM will prioritise loyalty, political alliances, grassroots strength or the perceived electability of whoever emerges as its flag bearer.
Aladwa's Governor Ambitions Complicate the ODM Succession Battle ¶
Karauri is not the only politician eyeing the ODM ticket.
Makadara MP George Aladwa, who serves as Nairobi ODM chairman, has also declared his interest in succeeding Sakaja.
Aladwa has considerable experience in Nairobi politics, having previously served as mayor of Nairobi, and his position within ODM gives him an important advantage in the unfolding nomination contest.
However, his ambitions could face a difficult reality if stronger gubernatorial contenders enter the race.
Aladwa could potentially strengthen his political influence by negotiating a deputy governor position rather than insisting on leading the gubernatorial ticket.
A political arrangement involving an influential Nairobi figure as deputy could help consolidate support across different political constituencies while giving a leading contender the opportunity to build a broader electoral coalition.
For Karauri, such negotiations could become important as he attempts to transform his Kasarani political support into a citywide movement.
The MP has already disclosed that he has spoken to the ODM chairman about beginning campaign tours across Nairobi.
His next challenge is demonstrating that his ambitions extend beyond business influence and parliamentary popularity.
Nairobi's 2027 contest will ultimately be decided by political organisation, alliances, service delivery records and the ability to convince voters that a change of leadership can improve their daily lives.
With Karauri, Sakaja and Aladwa eyeing the same political ground, ODM now holds one of the most consequential cards in Nairobi's unfolding succession battle.
