Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat has issued a stark warning to motorists, urging adherence to traffic regulations to prevent avoidable road accidents as the country approaches the holiday season. Speaking during the burial of Benjamin Kiptoo Sawe in Kamurguywa, Chesumei, Nandi County, Lagat emphasized that many road crashes could be averted through greater driver responsibility. Sawe died after a lorry struck the vehicle he was traveling in near Kinungi while en route to his son’s graduation ceremony at the General Service Unit. "There are so many accidents happening which can be avoided," Lagat stated, citing recent fatalities along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway due to human error. "We lost 17 people recently, and the number of vehicles and people on the roads is expected to rise during Christmas, increasing crash risks."

Lagat reiterated his call for compliance with traffic rules, stating, "We are asking all motorists to follow traffic rules so that we can bring these numbers down and avert wanton loss of lives." He also addressed the broader safety concerns, urging drivers to prioritize the well-being of other road users. The DIG’s remarks followed a series of high-profile accidents and come as police intensify efforts to combat road safety violations. His comments underscored the critical need for collective action to reduce preventable tragedies.

In addition to road safety, Lagat warned against the proliferation of illicit brews and narcotics, vowing to escalate crackdowns in Nandi County. He specifically mentioned operations in Baraton, Chepterit, Kapsabet, and Mosoriot, where authorities have already observed some improvements following prior warnings. "We want to ensure that we have a healthy society devoid of drugs," Lagat asserted, framing the initiative as a measure to protect communities. The police campaign aligns with broader efforts to address public health and safety challenges, particularly in regions prone to substance abuse and related crimes.

The DIG’s statements reflect a dual focus on road safety and crime prevention, both of which are critical during periods of heightened activity. As Christmas approaches, his appeal to motorists and residents highlights the importance of vigilance and adherence to regulations. With the potential for increased traffic and social gatherings, Lagat’s warnings serve as a timely reminder of the consequences of negligence and the role of individual responsibility in safeguarding public welfare.
