Safaricom has pledged Ksh 2 million to the 28th Safari Sevens tournament, aiming to enhance connectivity and fan engagement at Nyayo Stadium from October 9 to 11. The sponsorship, part of a two-year partnership with the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU), supports Kenya’s national sevens teams and includes player allowances, medical coverage, and financial literacy programs. Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom CEO, emphasized the company’s commitment to leveraging technology for sports development, stating the funding will improve network capacity to ensure seamless fan experiences and live broadcasts. "Safari 7s is an important platform for showcasing Kenya’s sporting talent and bringing fans together," Ndegwa said. "We wish Shujaa and the Lionesses success as they defend their titles."
The KRU’s partnership with Safaricom, valued at over KES 100 million, has provided monthly allowances, airtime, and medical insurance for players and officials. Harriet Okach, KRU Chairperson, highlighted the impact of the sponsorship on women’s rugby, noting M-PESA’s role in advancing the sport. "We are grateful for Safaricom’s continued collaboration," Okach said. "Its investment in connectivity will help fans stay connected, while its support for women’s rugby continues to make a meaningful difference." The 28th edition will feature 18 teams, including defending champions Kenya Shujaa and Kenya Lionesses, competing in men’s and women’s categories against international sides from Uganda, Tunisia, and Spain.
Safaricom’s contribution includes dedicated network upgrades to ensure reliable mobile connectivity during the event, enabling fans to share content and access live broadcasts. The company’s digital services will also extend to customer support and payment solutions for attendees. The Safari Sevens, a key fixture in Kenya’s sports calendar, has grown into a platform for both elite competition and community engagement. With the financial backing, organizers aim to elevate the tournament’s profile and attract larger crowds to support Kenya’s rugby teams. "We look forward to delivering an exciting Safari 7s," Okach added, urging fans to attend and rally behind the national teams.
The event’s significance extends beyond sports, reflecting broader efforts to harness technology for public benefit. Safaricom’s investment aligns with its corporate social responsibility goals, emphasizing digital inclusion and infrastructure development. As the tournament approaches, stakeholders remain focused on ensuring a smooth experience for participants and spectators alike. With the financial and technical support, the Safari Sevens are poised to reinforce Kenya’s reputation as a hub for high-level rugby and innovative event management.
