Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, officially launched the 16th Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE 2026) at Nairobi’s Uhuru Gardens National Monument and Museum on Wednesday. The event, running through October 8, targets a 5.5 million annual international tourist arrival goal by 2028, emphasizing digital transformation and artificial intelligence as central to the sector’s future. Over 10,000 delegates, 450 exhibitors, and 250 international travel buyers from 40 countries have gathered under the theme “Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Future of Tourism,” marking the largest edition in the expo’s history.

Miano highlighted that Kenya’s tourism sector has entered a new era defined by technological innovation and shifting traveler behaviors. She noted global international arrivals reached 1.5 billion in 2025, with Africa recording 81 million, while Kenya welcomed 2.7 million international visitors in 2025, generating Sh500 billion in revenue. Domestic travel also saw a record 5.2 million bed nights, underscoring the sector’s resilience. “The traveler of today is vastly different from the past. Technology has redefined how people discover, book, and engage with destinations,” Miano stated, stressing that AI and data analytics will be critical for competitive advantage in tourism.

The CS emphasized the need for inclusive digital adoption, ensuring grassroots operators, county-based businesses, and community conservancies can access digital platforms alongside multinational corporations. She credited President William Ruto’s leadership in advancing policies like the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system, which streamlined visitor entry. Miano also addressed health and safety concerns, confirming collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Kenyatta University’s Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre to maintain vigilance against public health risks.

Principal Secretary for Tourism, Amb. Julius Bitok, outlined how technology, sports infrastructure, and regional events like the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and 2029 World Athletics Championships will drive growth. “AFCON alone could bring one million visitors to Nairobi, demanding robust infrastructure and accommodation,” he said, noting partnerships with the private sector to meet these challenges. Meanwhile, Principal Secretary for Wildlife, Ms. Silvia Museiya Kihoro, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to wildlife conservation as the backbone of Kenya’s tourism economy, prioritizing community integration to ensure local benefits from tourism revenues.

Uganda’s State Minister for Tourism, Susan Nakawuki, called for deeper East African Community (EAC) integration, urging policymakers to eliminate non-tariff barriers and reduce intra-African air travel costs. “We must market East Africa as a unified destination, not as individual nations,” she said, framing Kenya as an ally rather than a competitor. The expo also features B2B matchmaking, investment seminars, and cultural exhibitions by Kenyan counties, aiming to attract global investors and boost local tourism narratives.

The event underscores Kenya’s strategic focus on leveraging technology and regional collaboration to sustain tourism growth. With the 2028 target and upcoming mega-events, the government seeks to position the country as a leader in innovative, sustainable tourism. As Miano concluded, “The future of tourism belongs to those who adapt, innovate, and prioritize both visitor experiences and environmental stewardship.”

The Magical Kenya Travel Expo continues through October 8, offering a platform for stakeholders to shape the sector’s trajectory. The government’s emphasis on digital inclusivity, health security, and regional cooperation reflects a multifaceted approach to achieving long-term tourism success.
