Kiambu County officials and environmental partners launched Mazingira Week on Monday, aiming to boost public engagement in environmental conservation through a week-long initiative. The event, held at Kiambu National Polytechnic, brought together representatives from the national and county governments, Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Red Cross, local administrators, and other stakeholders. Activities include public sensitization campaigns, clean-up exercises, and tree planting, with a roadside planting event scheduled for October 9 in collaboration with the Ministry of Roads and Kenya National Highways Authority.
Kiambu Deputy County Commissioner Titus Macharia emphasized the urgency of environmental action during the launch, linking climate change to agricultural disruptions, business losses, and increased human-wildlife conflict. He highlighted that animals are traveling farther for resources, encroaching on human settlements, and urged residents to plant and nurture trees for long-term benefits. 'We have seen devastating effects of climate change where even animals have to go far to look for water and food, invading people’s homesteads, let’s plant and take good care of trees,' Macharia stated.
Kiambu County Forest Conservator Andrew Matindi stressed that Mazingira Week prioritizes tree survival over mere planting, calling awareness the 'most important part.' He explained that the October 9 roadside planting would create shaded pedestrian routes, addressing discomfort from sunlight exposure. 'We want to ensure that our people are comfortable even while trekking,' Matindi said. The initiative also includes ongoing clean-up efforts in parts of the county, as reported by Macharia.
Kiambu National Polytechnic Chief Principal Sammy K. Waititu praised the county administration for selecting the institution as the launch venue, noting the polytechnic's rainwater harvesting systems and waste segregation programs. He highlighted the school's Green Army initiative in maintaining cleanliness and encouraged participants to adopt sustainable practices. The event served as a platform for stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to environmental conservation and mobilize public participation in Mazingira Week activities.
