Football Leaks Founder Rui Pinto Faces Security Crisis After Protection Threatened

Rui Pinto, the Portuguese whistleblower behind Football Leaks, is facing a new security crisis after authorities moved to end the protected witness arrangements he has relied on since 2020.

Pinto’s lawyers say the decision could leave him without secure accommodation and potentially without police protection despite continuing threats linked to revelations that exposed sensitive financial and contractual information across European football.

The 37-year-old computer expert has cooperated with Portuguese and European investigators after handing over millions of encrypted files. His disclosures triggered investigations into clubs, players, and agents, while his hacking activities led to a suspended prison sentence.

Rui Pinto Faces Loss of Protected Witness Status

Pinto’s lawyers said he was informed that the special security programme under which he has been protected since August 2020 would terminate on October 10. According to the legal team, the decision means Pinto would lose the secure, confidential accommodation provided under the programme and would have to urgently find alternative housing.

His lawyers have raised particular concern over whether police protection will continue after the security arrangements end. They argue that removing the existing safeguards could expose Pinto to significant risks because his disclosures involved powerful individuals and organizations with substantial financial resources.

The lawyers also said Pinto had not been given a prior hearing before the decision was made, arguing that the process failed to provide him with an opportunity to challenge the proposed termination of his protection.

The security concerns have been heightened by an alleged assault against Pinto in Lisbon in April. His lawyers cited the incident as evidence that the threats surrounding him are not merely theoretical.

The legal team has warned that Pinto could become more vulnerable if he loses protected accommodation without a clear replacement security arrangement. The dispute therefore goes beyond housing and raises questions about how authorities protect whistleblowers who continue to face potential risks after cooperating with investigations.

Football Leaks Exposed European Football Secrets

Pinto became internationally known after launching Football Leaks in 2015, publishing confidential documents obtained through unauthorized access to computer systems. The material contained millions of files involving some of the biggest names and organizations in football.

The documents were later passed to a consortium of European investigative media organizations, allowing journalists to examine the financial affairs of football clubs, players, and agents. The resulting investigations exposed information that contributed to tax adjustments and judicial proceedings in several European countries.

The disclosures also became relevant to investigations into Manchester City’s finances. Pinto has been described as the source behind Football Leaks material that helped trigger scrutiny of the Premier League club’s financial affairs.

His activities turned him into a controversial figure. Supporters of his disclosures have regarded the information as important for exposing questionable practices in a sport dominated by enormous financial interests. Authorities, however, prosecuted Pinto over the methods he used to obtain the information.

Pinto was arrested in Hungary in January 2019, where he had been living, and was subsequently extradited to Portugal. He spent more than a year in pre-trial detention before reaching an agreement with Portuguese authorities to cooperate with investigators.

Under that arrangement, he provided access to encrypted data containing millions of files. His cooperation resulted in an unusual legal position in which he became both a defendant facing prosecution and a protected witness assisting the justice system.

Pinto has also cooperated with investigators from other European countries, making the information contained in his files relevant beyond Portugal.

Rui Pinto now faces losing protected housing and potentially police protection despite ongoing investigations, an alleged assault, and continued risks linked to his revelations.

Pinto Convicted Over Hacking And Extortion

Pinto’s whistleblowing activities did not shield him from criminal prosecution. During his first trial, he admitted illegally accessing computers to obtain millions of documents before publishing some of the material through Football Leaks.

A Portuguese court sentenced him in September 2023 to a suspended four-year prison term after finding him guilty of attempted extortion, illegal access to data, and breach of correspondence.

The conviction remains an important part of Pinto’s complicated legal history. While his disclosures generated investigations and financial scrutiny, the court proceedings established that some of the methods used to obtain the information constituted criminal offences.

His case therefore presents a difficult balance between whistleblowing, investigative cooperation, and unlawful access to confidential information. Pinto has continued cooperating with authorities despite the conviction, while prosecutors and investigators have used information obtained from his files in wider investigations.

The decision to terminate his protected witness arrangements now introduces another chapter in that dispute. His lawyers argue that the circumstances that justified his protection in 2020 have not disappeared, particularly because investigations linked to his disclosures remain active and he has allegedly faced physical violence.

The October 10 deadline has consequently become a critical date for Pinto and his legal team. Unless alternative arrangements are secured, his lawyers say he could lose the protected accommodation that has provided security since he began cooperating with authorities.

The controversy also highlights the risks faced by whistleblowers whose information reaches powerful institutions and individuals. Pinto’s disclosures transformed the debate around financial transparency in European football, but his own legal battles demonstrate the consequences of obtaining confidential information through unauthorized means.

For Pinto, the immediate question is whether Portuguese authorities will maintain adequate protection after the existing programme ends. His lawyers are demanding greater scrutiny of the decision, citing his continuing vulnerability and the unresolved investigations arising from his disclosures.

The outcome could determine whether the Football Leaks founder remains under formal protection or is forced to navigate the security risks independently after years of cooperation with investigators. It also leaves authorities facing a difficult question over how to balance criminal accountability with the protection of a witness whose information has contributed to major investigations across European football.
