The governor highlighted that the current valuation of AI-driven companies, including tech giants like Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon, reflects high expectations for the technology’s future impact. However, he cautioned that not all firms will succeed, citing historical examples such as Netscape, which once dominated internet search but is now obsolete.

Bailey also pointed to emerging risks, including AI-facilitated cyber attacks and the proliferation of deepfake technology. He revealed that the Bank of England has faced challenges in tracing deepfake content, such as images depicting him and politician Nigel Farage in a fabricated physical altercation.

Despite the risks, Bailey acknowledged AI’s potential to enhance decision-making processes, including its role in supporting the Monetary Policy Committee’s work on interest rates. He stressed the need for regulatory vigilance to ensure financial systems remain resilient amid the AI boom.
