Kwale County Governor Fatuma Achani received mobility aids valued at Sh7.3 million from Hope Mobility Kenya in collaboration with Sense International Kenya, benefiting over 200 individuals with special needs across the county. The donation included Freewheel Chairs, Hope Havens, Drives, DX Basic units, crutches, and walking canes, aimed at enhancing mobility and independence for children and vulnerable groups. The handover occurred at the County Headquarters, where Achani, accompanied by Deputy Chirema Kombo, expressed gratitude to the organizations for their support. "I urge parents not to hide children with special needs. Let us speak up and come forward so that we can identify them and provide the necessary support," she stated, emphasizing community engagement in addressing accessibility challenges.

Sense International Kenya Country Lead Daniel Musango praised the County Government for facilitating the partnership, highlighting its role in expanding access to mobility assistance. "Through this collaboration, we are able to reach and support children and other vulnerable persons who require mobility aid," he said. Hope Mobility Kenya representative Jack Muthui commended the initiative, stating the organization seeks to strengthen its partnership with Kwale County to further empower marginalized groups. Both entities underscored the importance of public-private collaboration in addressing disability-related barriers.

The donation aligns with Kwale County’s efforts to improve services for persons with disabilities, a priority outlined in the 2023-2027 County Development Plan. Achani noted that the devices would enable beneficiaries to participate more fully in education, healthcare, and community activities, fostering social inclusion. Local advocacy groups have welcomed the initiative, citing a critical need for such resources in a region where 12% of the population lives with disabilities, according to 2022 census data. The partnership also reflects broader national goals under the Kenya National Disability Policy, which emphasizes equitable access to assistive technologies.

The rollout of the mobility aids follows a needs assessment conducted by Sense International Kenya in partnership with the Kwale County Department of Social Services. Over 200 beneficiaries were identified through community outreach programs, with distribution scheduled to commence in the next three months. Achani reiterated the county’s commitment to scaling similar initiatives, stating, "Every child deserves the opportunity to move, learn, and thrive. This is just the beginning of a long-term partnership to build a more inclusive Kwale." The project is expected to impact at least 500 individuals over the next year through follow-up support and training programs.
