The Kenya Forest Service has identified 176.8 hectares of plantation and woodlot sites across Kiambu, including Kereita 6D, Uplands Lari 1C, and Thogoto’s Dagoretti 8D and 7B, among others. County Forest Conservator Andrew M. Matindi reported that 279,870 seedlings, including Cupressus lusitanica, Eucalyptus, and Grevillea robusta, are earmarked for planting. Matindi highlighted the need for additional support in areas such as agroforestry seedlings, transport, labor, and community mobilization, noting that 1,987,902 exotic and indigenous seedlings are available in nine nurseries.
National Mazingira Week will feature daily activities led by ministries, beginning with a flag-off in Trans Nzoia on October 5, followed by school tree-planting, agroforestry initiatives, highway greening, and a nationwide clean-up on October 8. The climax on October 10 will involve a synchronized one-hour tree-planting exercise targeting six million trees, with President William Ruto expected to lead the event. Kiambu’s local committee will align its activities with the national calendar, focusing on tree planting, clean-ups, and public awareness, while emphasizing the importance of timely seedling transportation and community engagement.
The Mazingira Day initiative is part of Kenya’s 15 billion Tree Growing Programme (2022–2032), which prioritizes tree survival through monitoring via digital tools like the JazaMiti app. Officials stressed the need for partnerships to address logistical gaps, with Matundura committing to mobilize additional stakeholders. The county’s efforts aim to contribute to national environmental goals while fostering local ecological resilience.
