The event, organized by Serena Golf Captain Jimmy Mugerwa—who also serves as Chairman of the Uganda Breweries Limited Board and Patron of the Johnnie Walker Blue Club—aimed to create a unique platform for networking and brand interaction. The tournament, held at Lake Victoria Serena, featured a shotgun start at midday, with Mugerwa teeing off at the third hole after a whisky toast, setting the tone for the day’s activities.

The competition included multiple categories, with Sahil Halai emerging as the overall winner with 43 points, securing a trophy, a Callaway Odyssey 2-Ball Putter, and a Cornerstone hamper. Other notable winners included Allan Atuhaire (Guest Category, 39 points), Rhoda Kimera (Ladies Group B, 38 points), and Gloria Nanyonga (Ladies Group A, 34 points). In the men’s divisions, Dr. John Byabagambi (Group C, 35 points), Patrick Sumata (Group B, 38 points), and Henry Kibuuka (Group A, 39 points) claimed top honors. The event also featured side competitions, with Uganda Golf Union President Dr. Jackson Were winning the Best Recovery Shot award, and Claver Serumaga taking Most Balls in Water, among other accolades.

The tournament’s 19th hole transformed into a Johnnie Walker Blue Club experience, offering guests a yacht-based toast led by Mugerwa, Johnnie Walker East Africa Brand Manager Christine Kyokunda, and Lake Victoria Serena Director of Golf Theo Van Rooyen. Attendees enjoyed dinner, a whisky masterclass, and personalized gifting sessions. Mugerwa praised the event’s success, stating, “The inaugural Captain’s Putter has been a tremendous success… I am particularly pleased with how the Johnnie Walker Blue Club experience has come together.” He emphasized the event’s role in fostering “meaningful conversations” beyond golf.

Johnnie Walker’s involvement highlighted its strategy to engage customers through exclusive social experiences. Kyokunda noted the brand’s focus on the Keep Walking platform, aligning with golf’s ethos of perseverance. She reported increased Blue Club sign-ups and described the event as “a wonderful, fun-filled day.” The partnership underscores corporate efforts to leverage sporting events for brand-building, moving beyond traditional advertising to create immersive interactions.

Entertainment complemented the tournament, with guitarist Myko Ouma and singer Elijah Kitaka performing at the 19th hole. The blend of sports, music, and networking reflected a growing trend among corporations to use such events for relationship-building. Van Rooyen announced the Captain’s Putter would become an annual fixture on Lake Victoria Serena’s golfing calendar, signaling its potential as a recurring hub for elite networking and brand engagement.

The inaugural event underscored the intersection of sport, luxury, and corporate strategy, with Serena Golf positioning itself as a premier destination for high-profile gatherings. The collaboration between the resort, Johnnie Walker, and local business leaders demonstrated how sporting events can serve as catalysts for community and commercial connections, while also celebrating the enduring appeal of golf as a social and competitive pursuit.
