Kampala, Uganda – SchoolPay, a Ugandan education payment platform, has launched Asome, an initiative to ensure children's education continues uninterrupted following the death of a registered parent or guardian. The program, part of the broader 'Do More with SchoolPay' campaign, provides financial support for school fees over three terms, addressing a critical gap in educational continuity during family crises. For families in Uganda, maintaining a child's education often requires meticulous financial planning. However, the sudden loss of a parent or guardian can disrupt this stability, leaving children at risk of falling behind. Asome by SchoolPay aims to mitigate this by automatically covering school fees for three academic terms, subject to verification processes and program criteria. The initiative, set to launch in November 2026, eliminates the need for separate registration or additional payments for existing SchoolPay users. The process begins when a school notifies SchoolPay after a family reports the death of a registered parent or guardian. Verification involves documents such as a death certificate and proof of prior fee payments. Once approved, SchoolPay directly pays the child's school, ensuring funds are allocated to education. The program also adapts to transitions, such as a student moving from primary to secondary school, extending support to the new institution for three terms. Fincom CEO Charity Atukwatsa emphasized the initiative's focus on family resilience: 'The process begins with the school. Once the family notifies the school of the death of the registered parent or guardian, the school informs SchoolPay.' She highlighted that the program prioritizes educational continuity, recognizing that disruptions in family circumstances should not equate to disruptions in a child's schooling. Asome reflects SchoolPay's evolving role beyond transactional services. The platform, which initially simplified fee payments, now offers tools like S-Wallet for digital pocket money transfers, ERP solutions for school management, and SchoolPay Medical for health data management. These services collectively form an ecosystem designed to support the entire education journey, from financial transactions to administrative needs. The initiative underscores the interconnectedness of education within a broader network of schools, families, and institutions. By addressing sudden financial shocks, Asome provides families with time to reorganize responsibilities, allowing children to focus on their studies during transitional periods. This aligns with SchoolPay's mission to 'do more' by creating solutions that respond to real-world challenges in education. SchoolPay's Asome initiative positions itself as a practical intervention to safeguard education during crises.
