Nyabongo’s mother, Yusta Asiimwe Kijanangoma Amooti, arrived at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal on Sunday evening, marking the start of her temporary residence ahead of her son Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I’s coronation on Tuesday. The procession, which included family members, clan representatives, and friends, traversed Fort Portal City before reaching the palace, where she was greeted with traditional ululations and celebrations by the Babiito royal clan and well-wishers. Prince Charles Kamurasi, head of the Babiito royal clan, formally welcomed Asiimwe and her Abagombe clan, calling her arrival a new chapter in Tooro Kingdom history. Kamurasi presented her with the palace house and authorized her to begin duties as the king’s mother, a role central to the kingdom’s traditional hierarchy.
The visit underscored the ceremonial and political significance of the Omujwera Nyina Omukama, or king’s mother, who ranks among the four principal figures in Tooro’s monarchy alongside the Omukama, the Musuuga (clan leader), and the king’s sister, the Batebe. Petero Rukindo, head of the Abagombe clan, expressed gratitude to the Musuuga for welcoming the clan and pledged cooperation in advancing the kingdom’s interests. He also requested guidance for Asiimwe as she assumes her responsibilities. Godfrey Kanyole, spokesperson for the Abagombe clan, noted the delegation brought gifts including cows and food, adhering to traditional customs. The arrival follows weeks of preparations for Nyabongo’s coronation, which will formally install him as the new Omukama of Tooro.
The event highlighted the interplay between tradition and contemporary governance in the Tooro Kingdom, a historical polity in western Uganda. Kamurasi emphasized the importance of unity among royal factions, stating, “This is a moment to reaffirm our shared commitment to the kingdom’s legacy.” Rukindo reiterated the Abagombe clan’s dedication to supporting the monarchy, while Kanyole described the gifts as symbols of goodwill.
