Dr. Miguna Miguna, the General of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) of the National Super Alliance (NASA), was arrested by a rogue police unit early morning on February 2, 2018. The unit, which was not authorized by the Inspector General of Police, used explosives to gain access to Miguna Miguna's house after he refused to let them in.
According to eyewitnesses, the police unit destroyed property and belongings inside the house after arresting Miguna Miguna. The arrest comes just a day after the Interior Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Fred Matiang'i, outlawed the NRM, labeling it an 'organized group of criminals.'
The NRM was formed shortly after President Uhuru Kenyatta's disputed victory in the October 26th presidential elections. The movement was announced by President Raila Odinga, who was inaugurated as the People's Democratically Elected President on January 30th at Uhuru Park.
The arrest of Miguna Miguna is seen as a strategic move by the Jubilee Administration to hunt down prominent NASA leaders. The administration has been accused of using excessive force and violating human rights in its crackdown on opposition leaders.
Just a few days ago, Ruaraka MP TJ Kajwang' was unlawfully arrested by the Jubilee Administration for attending an 'unlawful gathering' at Uhuru Park, where President Raila Odinga was inaugurated.
Dr. Miguna Miguna's arrest has sparked outrage among NASA supporters, who see it as a clear attempt by the Jubilee Administration to silence opposition voices.
