Fort Portal, Uganda – The Tooro Kingdom’s coronation of Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I has ignited widespread anticipation in the tourism hub, with preparations underway for the ceremony scheduled for September 29. Traditional arches known as ‘akakomo,’ constructed from royal reeds and thatched grass, have been erected at key entry points along major roads leading into the city, including Kisenyi, Harubaho, Mpanga, and Kachwamba. These structures, explained by former Tooro Kingdom Minister of Culture Zebidayo Mwesige, symbolize a centuries-old tradition of welcoming esteemed visitors, marking the kingdom’s formal reception of its new ruler. The city’s main roundabout has also been adorned with Tooro Kingdom flags, signaling the significance of the event.
Cultural vibrancy has permeated Fort Portal ahead of the coronation, with traditional dancers from the Home of Talents Cultural Troupe performing daily at the main roundabout. Rodgers Ayesiga, the troupe’s leader, stated the performances aim to foster communal enthusiasm for the occasion, emphasizing their role as a “gesture of goodwill and love for the kingdom.” Residents have expressed mixed emotions, balancing reverence for the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died in August 2026, with optimism for Nyabongo I’s reign. Charles Balinda, a local resident, noted the renewed community engagement in kingdom affairs, while Hindu Mugisa observed a distinct atmosphere compared to past coronation anniversaries. Immaculate Kabarokole, eager to witness her first coronation, highlighted the event’s cultural significance, and Anita Neema praised the city’s preparations as a testament to the kingdom’s enduring heritage.
The coronation process will commence with a service at St John’s Cathedral in Fort Portal, followed by the main ceremony at Karuziika Palace. President Yoweri Museveni is set to attend as the chief guest, underscoring the national importance of the occasion. Earlier this week, Nyabongo I’s procession through Fort Portal drew crowds who waved as he passed, further amplifying the city’s festive energy.
