Zanzibar’s government has unveiled an AI-driven strategy to transform its tourism sector, emphasizing digital innovation as a key tool for improving services and global market appeal. During the 2026 World Tourism Day celebrations, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage Dr. Aboud Suleiman Jumbe stated that artificial intelligence could streamline access to travel information, enhance destination marketing, and boost efficiency in areas like communication and resource management. The initiative aligns with the World Tourism Day theme ‘Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,’ reflecting Zanzibar’s commitment to leveraging technology for sustainable growth. Dr. Jumbe noted that AI could help promote Zanzibar’s beaches, historical sites, and cultural heritage, positioning the islands as a competitive destination in international tourism markets. The government’s plan includes expanding technological infrastructure and fostering public-private partnerships. Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Dr. Ashatu Kijaji reiterated the administration’s dedication to collaborating with the private sector to integrate AI and digital tools into tourism services, aiming to increase the sector’s economic contributions. She emphasized that technology would play a pivotal role in promoting attractions, improving visitor satisfaction, and ensuring long-term benefits for local communities. The discussions coincided with a global tourism landscape where 1.5 billion international tourists spent $1.8 trillion in 2025, according to UN Tourism data, underscoring the urgency of adopting innovative solutions to maintain Zanzibar’s relevance in the industry. International partners are also supporting Zanzibar’s digital transition. Germany’s GIZ representative Nicolas Lamade highlighted the importance of linking tourism with the blue economy, focusing on sustainable resource management and environmental protection. He noted that digital technologies could enhance water and energy efficiency, improve waste systems, and monitor marine ecosystems while ensuring community benefits. Meanwhile, Mr. Ali Amour, Chairman of the Zanzibar Tourism Development College Council, called for investing in youth education and skills training to prepare the next generation of tourism professionals. He argued that technological literacy and innovation would be critical for attracting visitors and strengthening the sector’s economic impact. Zanzibar’s approach reflects a broader shift toward technology-driven tourism, with officials stressing the need for infrastructure upgrades and workforce development. Dr. Jumbe outlined plans to equip young people with the expertise to harness emerging technologies, ensuring the islands remain competitive. As the sector evolves, the integration of AI and digital tools is positioned as a cornerstone for sustainable growth, balancing economic aspirations with environmental and social responsibilities.
