Akahuri FC concluded a three-year championship wait by defeating Zone FC 3-0 in the ninth season of the Kitunga League final at Inspire Africa Coffee Park in Rwashamaire, Ntungamo District. The Akahuri captain, speaking after receiving the Kitunga Shield, credited the triumph to perseverance and collective effort. 'We’ve been striving for three seasons, and today’s success is a testament to our commitment,' he said. The league’s significance extends beyond sport, as it rekindles bonds among alumni and strengthens connections to the school and Rwashamaire community. This season’s final, hosted in the community where the school is located, underscored its role as a platform for alumni engagement.
The ninth season, which began in March, initially featured matches at Kitante before relocating to Rwashamaire for the final stages. Kitunga League chairman Andrew Ntungomwe explained the venue choice as a tribute to Rwashamaire’s support for the school. The semi-finals saw Zone FC defeat Kyasha, while Akahuri edged out Kyimiranku to reach the final. Ntungomwe emphasized the league’s evolution beyond football, noting its role in maintaining relationships among former students.
Inspire Africa Coffee Park, the final’s host, highlighted its connection to the school through CEO Nelson Tugume, an alumnus. Asuman Kigongo, a representative of the coffee park, stated the venue was selected for its proximity to Muntuyera High School and its alumni ties. The event also served as a promotional opportunity for the business, aligning with its community engagement goals.
Muntuyera High School Kitunga’s headteacher, Joram Muzahura, praised the league’s impact on alumni health and cohesion. 'It keeps former students physically active and connected,' he said. The competition, which attracted 14 teams, has become a bridge between the school, its alumni, and local residents. Partners like Guinness and NBS Sport supported the event, with Uganda Breweries Limited’s Arthur Mugasha noting football’s role in fostering community bonds.
Ntungamo Municipality MP Gerald Karuhanga Kafureka commended the alumni for transforming the school. He cited a surge in student numbers from 200 in 2017 to over 1,300 by 2023, attributing it to alumni involvement. The final celebrations recognized these contributions, with awards presented to champions and standout performers. Akahuri now faces the challenge of defending their title in Season Ten, as the league continues to strengthen ties between the school, its alumni, and Rwashamaire.
The event also announced the arrival of the English Premier League trophy in Uganda from October 11–13, with a viewing party planned. This underscores the Kitunga League’s growing influence, blending local tradition with broader cultural engagement.
