NIC Life Assurance Company Limited and SPADES Insurance Brokers Limited have introduced FLIP (Family Life Insurance Plan), a digitally accessible family insurance product designed to provide financial security for Ugandan families during critical life events. The plan, launched on [insert date], offers coverage for the death of an insured family member or Permanent Total Disability (PTD) of the main policyholder, with annual premiums starting at Shs 50,000. A single policy can protect up to eight family members, including the main member, one spouse, up to four children or dependants, and two parents. Allen Amoko, CEO of NIC Life, emphasized the initiative’s goal to ensure families “navigate difficult moments with greater financial security,” while Christopher Ssengendo, CEO of SPADES, highlighted its role in making insurance “easier to understand, purchase, and access.”

The FLIP plan provides death benefits ranging from Shs 4 million to Shs 16 million and PTD benefits from Shs 2 million to Shs 8 million, depending on the selected package. Beneficiaries may opt for cash payments, funeral services through accredited partners, or a combination, subject to policy terms. This launch aligns with Uganda’s growing insurance sector, which recorded Shs 2.024 trillion in Gross Written Premiums (GWP) in 2025—a 14.72% increase from 2024. Life insurance premiums alone rose to Shs 977.6 billion in 2025, with further growth in 2026, as GWP reached Shs 1.094 trillion in the first half of the year. Despite this expansion, insurance penetration remains low, prompting FLIP’s focus on affordability and digital accessibility through its online platform, flip.spades.co.ug.

FLIP’s digital-first approach allows users to purchase and manage policies via mobile devices without visiting physical offices, addressing barriers to access in a country where only a fraction of the population utilizes insurance products. The plan leverages SPADES’ referral network to broaden reach, with officials stating it aims to “bring family protection closer to Ugandans.” Ssengendo noted that the initiative seeks to shift insurance from a post-crisis consideration to a proactive measure, ensuring “the people who depend on them” are financially safeguarded. NIC Life and SPADES positioned FLIP as a tool for financial inclusion, targeting underserved segments through simplified, low-cost coverage.

The introduction of FLIP underscores the evolving landscape of Uganda’s insurance industry, where innovation and digital transformation are critical to expanding access. While the sector’s growth reflects increasing awareness, challenges persist in reaching rural and low-income populations. By combining affordability, comprehensive coverage, and mobile technology, FLIP represents a strategic effort to bridge this gap. The plan’s launch follows a 30.04% rise in life premiums to Shs 524.14 billion in the first half of 2026, signaling momentum for products that prioritize accessibility. As Uganda’s insurance market continues to mature, initiatives like FLIP could play a pivotal role in fostering economic resilience for families across the nation.
