The African Aviation and Aerospace University (AAAU) in Abuja and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen aeronautical and space engineering education in Nigeria. The agreement, announced on Friday by AAAU’s Head of Public Relations, establishes a framework for academic collaboration, including the creation of a proposed Faculty of Aeronautical and Space Engineering at AAAU. The partnership aims to address the growing demand for specialized technical manpower in the aviation and aerospace sector, leveraging ABU Zaria’s expertise in engineering education, according to Mustapha Sheikh Abdullahi, Ag. Vice-Chancellor of AAAU.
Abdullahi emphasized that ABU Zaria’s Faculty of Engineering would provide critical academic and technical support for AAAU’s new faculty, while also facilitating Online Distance Learning (ODL) initiatives. He highlighted that ODL would enable AAAU to reach aviation professionals, working students, and international learners unable to pursue traditional full-time programs. The collaboration follows an earlier meeting between the institutions in May 2026, where mutual academic interests were identified, including knowledge exchange, postgraduate studies, and capacity development in aerospace engineering.
ABU Zaria’s Vice-Chancellor, Adamu Ahmad, welcomed the partnership, commending AAAU’s focus on specialized aviation education. He affirmed ABU Zaria’s commitment to supporting the development of the proposed faculty through its engineering expertise. Ahmad noted the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s need for skilled professionals to advance emerging technologies in the aviation and space sectors, strengthening the country’s technical capacity across the industry’s value chain.
The partnership is expected to deepen engineering education and create a pipeline of qualified personnel for Nigeria’s aviation and aerospace industry. It also underscores efforts by institutions like AAAU and ABU Zaria to address gaps in technical training, as highlighted in parallel initiatives such as NCAA and AAAU’s focus on sustainable aviation fuel. The collaboration reflects a broader push to align academic programs with national and global demands in aerospace innovation.
