Published on September 10, 2019, Nyali MP Mohamed Ali has become a vocal critic of the Joho county administration, exposing alleged corrupt deals and gaining admiration from residents who are unhappy with the management of the port city county.
Ali, known for his Jicho Pevu fame, has been increasingly vocal against corruption in Mombasa, which has earned him a reputation as a potential alternative to the Joho administration. Some Mombasa tycoons are reportedly grooming him to contest for the governorship seat in the 2022 general elections.
Ali's popularity has been fueled by his willingness to speak out against corruption, unlike some other politicians who have been quiet about the issues affecting the county. His outspoken nature has made him a favorite among residents who are dissatisfied with the Joho administration.
However, Ali is not the only one vying for the governorship seat. Other potential candidates include Mvita's Abdulswamad Nassir, Changamwe's Omar Mwinyi, Kisauni's Ali Mbogo, CS Najib Balala, county speaker Kharub Ibrahim, and Suleiman Shahbal. Former county secretary Francis Thoya has also thrown his hat into the ring, meeting with groups and opinion leaders to scheme for the governor seat.
It remains to be seen who will ultimately emerge as the preferred candidate for the governorship seat in Mombasa. However, one thing is clear: Mohamed Ali has become a force to be reckoned with in the county's politics.
