Young Ugandan innovators received Shs205 million in funding through the AYuTe Awards, aimed at scaling agricultural solutions to transform the country’s farming sector. The ceremony, held at Sheraton Hotel Kampala under the theme “Go big, Go bold,” brought together innovators, government officials, and stakeholders. Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Jonard Asiimwe praised the winners for their resilience in tackling agricultural challenges, emphasizing the significance of commercializing innovations. The event highlighted a surge in youth-driven innovation, with 836 applications recorded this year, marking a notable growth in Uganda’s innovation ecosystem.
Asiimwe outlined the government’s focus on adopting elements of the Chinese innovation model, prioritizing the development of marketable products and services. He urged innovators to remain customer-centric, advising them to build solutions addressing real societal needs rather than prioritizing technology for its own sake. The minister also encouraged winners to actively promote their innovations, stressing the importance of visibility and responsible use of the funding. “Don’t build something and sit with it at home. Let people know about it,” he said, while warning against misusing the financial support provided.
The AYuTe Awards, designed to identify and accelerate youth-led agricultural innovations, have become a critical platform for fostering sustainable solutions. This year’s recipients will use the Shs205 million to expand their projects, contributing to Uganda’s agricultural transformation. Asiimwe’s remarks underscored the government’s commitment to creating an environment where innovations can thrive, aligning with broader efforts to enhance food security and rural development.
