Britam Asset Managers Uganda has launched KidNest, a children’s investment plan designed to cultivate early financial literacy and long-term savings habits among Ugandan families. The product, introduced under the company’s ‘Get Ready for Bigger’ campaign, allows initial investments of Shs20,000, with optional contributions starting at Shs10,000. This initiative addresses a gap identified in the 2023 FinScope Uganda survey, which found 60% of adults save regularly but over 70% lack structured long-term financial plans. The program, offered through Britam’s Money Market Fund, enables families to invest in goals ranging from education to skill development while fostering discussions about financial discipline.
Chief Executive Officer Peace Gakwaya emphasized that KidNest aims to help families prioritize children’s futures even with limited resources. ‘Starting an investment for a child creates an opportunity to plan for long-term goals early,’ Gakwaya stated, highlighting the benefits of compounding and early exposure to financial decision-making. The plan’s flexibility—no mandatory contribution schedule and no lock-in period—allows families to adjust investments based on their circumstances. Contributors include parents, grandparents, guardians, and well-wishers, with the option to channel gifts or allowances into the fund.
Unlike traditional savings accounts, KidNest provides access to Britam’s professionally managed Money Market Fund, which invests in low-risk, short-term instruments. While the fund prioritizes capital preservation, returns are not guaranteed. Children can actively participate in setting investment goals and tracking progress, an approach intended to instill financial awareness from a young age. The product’s design aligns with a broader trend among Ugandan financial institutions to shift households from short-term savings to goal-oriented investments, though challenges like competing household expenses remain. Britam’s model allows for ad-hoc contributions, addressing barriers to consistent savings.
The introduction of KidNest reflects growing efforts to build an investment culture in Uganda, where financial planning is often overlooked. By linking personal ambitions to structured savings, the initiative seeks to empower families to balance immediate needs with future aspirations. With no fixed payment schedule and a focus on education, the program aims to create a generation of financially informed citizens. Britam’s ‘Bigger Dreams’ campaign underscores this vision, positioning KidNest as a tool to transform saving habits into sustainable wealth-building practices.
