Skyway Aviation Handling Company PLC (SAHCO) has introduced a high-capacity AmbuLift, becoming the first Nigerian aviation ground handler to deploy the specialized equipment for passengers with reduced mobility (PRM), enhancing accessibility and dignity during embarkation and disembarkation. The hydraulic lifting system raises an enclosed cabin to aircraft-door level, enabling safe transfers for wheelchair users and passengers requiring stretcher support, particularly at remote stands without boarding bridges. This development follows SAHCO’s earlier investment in Evac-Chairs, which facilitate mobility assistance on steps where specialized equipment is needed.
The AmbuLift’s deployment underscores SAHCO’s commitment to improving PRM services, passenger safety, and accessibility. The company collaborated with British Airways, a premium customer, to align the equipment’s procedures and operational standards with global best practices. Taiwo Afolabi, SAHCO’s Chairman (CON), emphasized that the AmbuLift allows the company to directly address PRM needs rather than relying on improvisation, ensuring dignified care from the apron to the aircraft door. Adenike Aboderin, SAHCO’s Managing Director/CEO, highlighted the investment as a reflection of the company’s people-first approach and adherence to international standards.
Prior to deployment, Expavia Aviation Consultants, a UK-based consultancy, provided project advisory and coordination support for testing, commissioning, certification, and training. Ergon Training Center, a European ground support equipment specialist, delivered theoretical and practical training, technical inspections, and functional checks at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. SAHCO’s certified AmbuLift operators met IATA AHM 1110 RMP 14m standards, ensuring compliance with safety and operational protocols.
The AmbuLift complements SAHCO’s broader aviation support services, including passenger handling, baggage handling, ramp operations, cargo handling, aviation security, and premium lounge services.
