On September 10, 2019, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro was released from police custody after his lawyer, Irungu Kang'ata, successfully argued that there was no evidence to warrant his arrest.
Speaking to Citizen TV, Mr. Kang'ata refuted claims that his client had been in hiding, stating that the MP had even presided over Constituency Development Fund (CDF) projects during the day and appeared on a Citizen TV show the previous night.
According to Mr. Kang'ata, his client's supporters were not happy with the arrest, which led to chaotic scenes in Murang'a Town.
The Kiharu MP was arrested on Monday night after leaders clashed during a church fundraiser in Murang'a County. The Tanga Tanga team, led by Nyoro, reportedly stormed Gitui Catholic Church and attempted to disrupt the fundraiser.
Nominated MP Maina Kamanda, affiliated to the Kieleweke faction, had been invited as the chief guest. The two factions reportedly clashed over who among the two leaders should have introduced the guests.
Mr. Nyoro was quoted in the Daily Nation as saying, 'I can't allow people from Nairobi to come and take over my constituency as if they know this area. I am an elected leader and I tell Mr. Kamanda to his face that let them produce the list of the guests so that I can invite them.'
