MTN Uganda and WWF Uganda’s PachiPanda Innovation Challenge 2026 is opening applications for a new cohort of young innovators seeking to address environmental and economic challenges through sustainable solutions. The initiative, now in its second year in Uganda, targets individuals aged 18 to 35, including university students, entrepreneurs, and youth-led small businesses, who are developing projects aligned with four focus areas: climate resilience, sustainable livelihoods, biodiversity conservation, and digital solutions for Africa’s green economy.

The challenge, which emphasizes turning environmental problems into economic opportunities, has already launched successful ventures like FarmGate Digital, KampalaBuzzline, and Bottle for Cash Eco-Drop. These 2025 winners gained mentorship, funding, and exposure that propelled their growth, with FarmGate Digital expanding to serve over 4,000 members and facilitating 217 tonnes of food movement, while KampalaBuzzline’s pollinator conservation efforts inspired international adoption in Costa Rica.

Ruth Kyobutungi, founder of FarmGate Digital, highlighted the program’s value beyond financial rewards. ‘The money was important, but the confidence, exposure, and opportunities that followed were even more valuable,’ she said. Her platform addresses post-harvest losses and market unpredictability for farmers, leveraging data-driven tools to improve pricing and storage decisions.

Hannington Sserwanga, creator of KampalaBuzzline, focused on restoring pollinator habitats through community-led conservation and digital mapping. His project, which operates a nursery with over 10,000 nectar-rich plants, generates income while supporting biodiversity. ‘PachiPanda helped us scale our impact and connect with global networks,’ Sserwanga noted, citing the adoption of his ‘Kampala Bee-Run’ innovation in Costa Rica.

Bottle for Cash Eco-Drop, another 2025 winner, tackles plastic pollution by incentivizing waste collection and recycling. The initiative demonstrates how environmental challenges can be transformed into enterprise opportunities, fostering cleaner communities and circular economies. ‘PachiPanda provided the tools to refine our model and expand our reach,’ said the team behind the project.

Enid Edroma, MTN Uganda’s General Manager Corporate Services, emphasized the challenge’s role in fostering innovation. ‘We see environmental challenges as opportunities for enterprise and job creation,’ she stated. ‘PachiPanda empowers young Ugandans to turn ideas into solutions that benefit both people and the planet.’

Rita Kyategeka, WWF Uganda’s Partnerships Manager, underscored the program’s dual focus on conservation and economic growth. ‘Solutions must protect nature while improving livelihoods,’ she said. ‘PachiPanda showcases how innovation can bridge these goals, creating a sustainable future for Uganda.’

The 2026 competition’s top three winners will receive Shs15 million, Shs10 million, and Shs5 million, respectively, alongside the chance to represent Uganda at the continental PachiPanda finals in South Africa in February 2027. Applications close on 30 September 2026 via the PachiPanda Challenge website, with organizers encouraging innovators to submit ideas that address real-world environmental issues.

Previous participants’ success stories illustrate that PachiPanda prioritizes practical solutions over fully formed business models. ‘You don’t need all the answers—just a clear problem and a viable solution,’ said a program representative. The initiative aims to cultivate a new generation of entrepreneurs who can drive climate resilience, biodiversity protection, and green enterprise in Uganda.

As Uganda grapples with climate change, resource depletion, and youth unemployment, PachiPanda offers a platform to harness local ingenuity for global impact. By connecting innovators with mentorship, funding, and international exposure, the challenge reinforces the potential of youth-led initiatives to shape a sustainable and inclusive economy.

The 2026 PachiPanda Innovation Challenge underscores the growing intersection of environmental stewardship and economic opportunity in Africa. With its focus on scalable, community-driven solutions, the program positions Ugandan innovators to contribute to the continent’s green economy while addressing pressing local and global challenges.
