The Choose Milk Campaign, a national initiative led by the Danish Dairy Board, the European Union, and the Nigerian federal government, has launched a national essay contest for primary school pupils. The competition, aimed at educating children on dairy nutrition, encourages participants to write letters to their school heads on differentiating milk from creamers. Lars Jensen, senior project manager at the Danish Dairy Board, highlighted the initiative’s goal to empower children with knowledge that influences family dietary choices. 'Children are not only consumers but also key voices in their households,' Jensen stated, underscoring the campaign’s focus on fostering informed decision-making from an early age.

The contest, open to pupils in Primary 4 to 6 (ages 9–11), will run from September 15 to October 31, 2026, across Enugu, Kaduna, Lagos, Rivers, Oyo, and the Federal Capital Territory. Participants must submit a letter detailing how students can distinguish between milk and creamers, including personal details and school information. The campaign, part of a three-year effort to improve consumer awareness, seeks to address misconceptions about dairy products and promote healthier choices. Organizers plan to expand the initiative to additional states as the program progresses, aligning with broader goals to strengthen nutritional education in Nigeria.

The Choose Milk Campaign, launched in collaboration with dairy stakeholders, aims to bridge knowledge gaps about milk’s nutritional benefits and the differences between authentic milk and creamers. By engaging students in creative writing, the initiative hopes to cultivate a generation capable of advocating for healthier diets within their communities. The competition also reflects partnerships between international and local entities to address public health challenges through education. As the program evolves, its impact on household dietary habits and long-term health outcomes remains a central focus for organizers.

The initiative underscores the importance of early education in shaping lifelong habits, with a particular emphasis on empowering children to become informed advocates for nutritious choices. By integrating school-based activities with community outreach, the campaign seeks to create a sustainable shift in how Nigerian families perceive and consume dairy products. The success of this first edition will likely influence future phases of the Choose Milk Campaign, which aims to expand its reach and deepen its educational impact nationwide.
