The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Lagos State Council has unveiled the logo for its 2026 Media Games and conducted football draws, marking a significant step in preparations for the event scheduled from 5 to 9 October 2026. The initiative, organized by the NUJ Lagos State Council, seeks to provide journalists with a platform to relax, interact, and compete outside their professional roles, fostering camaraderie and teamwork among media professionals in Lagos.

The event, held at the NUJ Secretariat in Lagos, featured the unveiling of the official logo and the draw for the five-a-side football competition. Journalists from various NUJ chapels and media organizations across Lagos State are expected to participate in a week of sporting activities, including indoor events like table tennis, chess, Ayo, draughts, and Ludo, as well as outdoor events such as football and a 100-metre race. The games will take place at the Agege Mini Stadium and the NUJ Secretariat.

Speaking at the press conference, Adeleye Ajayi, Chairman of the NUJ Lagos State Council, emphasized the importance of the Media Games in offering journalists a respite from their demanding work. 'As journalists, we spend so much time informing and serving the society; however, this event provides us with an opportunity to relax, connect, compete, and celebrate one another,' Ajayi stated. He highlighted the event's role in promoting unity, professionalism, and excellence among participants.

Ajayi described the logo as a symbol of the values the organizers aim to uphold. 'The logo represents the spirit of unity, professionalism, teamwork, and excellence that the Games seek to promote,' he said. He also expressed gratitude to sponsors, partners, and individuals who contributed to the event's organization, calling their support 'instrumental' in its success.

Ayo Ojedokun, Chairman of the 2026 NUJ Lagos State Council Press Week Committee, reiterated the event's purpose of allowing journalists to unwind and showcase their sporting talents. 'Journalism is a demanding profession, and we believe our colleagues deserve an opportunity to relax, interact, and showcase their talents outside the newsroom,' Ojedokun said. He added that the games would also strengthen relationships and promote healthy living among participants.

Ojedokun emphasized the logo's role in defining the event's identity. 'The unveiling of the logo today is significant because it gives the Games a distinct identity and symbolizes the values we hope to promote—unity, teamwork, professionalism, friendship, and healthy competition,' he said. He also encouraged corporate organizations, government agencies, and individuals to support the event, assuring them of visibility and recognition.

The football draws, which produced two groups each for the men’s and women’s competitions, included participation from media outlets such as Lagos Information, Voice of Nigeria (VON), Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), The Nation, Vanguard, Federal Ministry of Information and Culture (FMMC), Lagos Television (LTV), The Guardian, Traffic Radio, and others. The organizers noted that these events would be part of the broader 2026 NUJ Lagos State Council Press Week activities.

Ajayi and Ojedokun both urged participants to uphold sportsmanship throughout the competition. 'Let us compete fairly, respect one another, and, above all, enjoy the spirit of camaraderie that the Games represent,' Ojedokun said. The organizers also called for continued support from stakeholders to ensure the event's success.

The 2026 Media Games are positioned as an enduring platform for journalists to build professional and personal relationships. 'We want these Games to become an enduring platform where journalists can build relationships and create memorable experiences,' Ojedokun added. He highlighted the importance of the event in fostering a sense of community among media professionals.

The NUJ Lagos State Council's initiative aligns with broader efforts to address the challenges faced by journalists, including the need for mental health support and work-life balance. By integrating sports and fellowship into professional development, the council aims to create a more resilient and cohesive media community in Lagos.

The event's schedule includes a variety of activities designed to cater to diverse interests. Indoor events will feature table tennis, chess, Ayo, draughts, and Ludo, while outdoor activities will include five-a-side football and a 100-metre race. The organizers emphasized that the games would not only be competitive but also inclusive, encouraging participation from all levels of the media industry.

The Media Games are part of the NUJ Lagos State Council's annual Press Week, which has historically served as a platform for media professionals to engage in both professional and recreational activities. This year's edition is expected to draw widespread participation, reflecting the growing importance of such initiatives in the media sector.

Public interest in the event has been high, with media outlets and industry stakeholders expressing support for the NUJ's efforts to promote wellness and collaboration among journalists. The event's focus on teamwork and healthy competition is seen as a positive step toward addressing the pressures of the journalism profession.

The organizers have also highlighted the potential for the Media Games to serve as a model for similar initiatives in other regions of Nigeria. By demonstrating the benefits of integrating sports and fellowship into professional development, the NUJ Lagos State Council hopes to inspire other media unions to adopt similar programs.

The 2026 Media Games underscore the importance of maintaining a balance between professional responsibilities and personal well-being. As the media landscape continues to evolve, such initiatives play a crucial role in ensuring that journalists remain motivated, connected, and resilient.

The event's success will depend on continued collaboration between the NUJ, sponsors, and the broader media community. With a clear focus on unity, professionalism, and healthy competition, the 2026 Media Games are poised to become a landmark event in Lagos's media calendar.

The NUJ Lagos State Council's efforts reflect a growing recognition of the need for holistic approaches to professional development in the media sector. By creating opportunities for journalists to engage in non-work-related activities, the council is contributing to a more sustainable and supportive environment for media professionals.

The 2026 Media Games are expected to leave a lasting impact on the Lagos media community, fostering stronger relationships and a renewed sense of purpose among participants. As the event approaches, anticipation is building for what promises to be a memorable and meaningful celebration of journalism in Lagos.
