The South East Development Commission (SEDC) launched its South East Agro-Development Programme with the inauguration of a 200-hectare integrated model farm in Nkanu East Local Government Area, Enugu State, in partnership with the Enugu State Government. The initiative, described as a multi-component agricultural facility, combines fodder production, dairy, poultry, fisheries, greenhouse farming, processing, mechanization, renewable energy, and agricultural training under one coordinated system. SEDC Executive Director Cliff Ogbede emphasized that the project seeks to demonstrate how integrated value chain components can create a sustainable and productive agricultural model. "This is not a conventional farm focused on a single enterprise," Ogbede stated in a Wednesday release. "It is designed to showcase how modern agriculture can be structured to maximize efficiency and impact."
Enugu State Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai highlighted the project’s significance as a testament to intergovernmental collaboration. "This facility exemplifies what can be achieved when institutions align around a shared development goal," Ossai said during the launch. He underscored the state’s commitment to fostering productive investment, noting that the project would generate employment, enhance skills, and strengthen the agricultural value chain. "We envision this as a cornerstone for economic growth in Nkanu East, Enugu State, and the broader South East region," he added. The farm’s design, according to SEDC Managing Director Mark Okoye, is intended to redefine the region’s agricultural approach. "This is about building productive capacity," Okoye said. "By integrating land, technology, mechanization, and market access, we aim to create a blueprint for scalable agricultural development."
The project’s impact, Okoye explained, extends beyond its physical boundaries. "The true measure of success lies in the ripple effects," he said. This includes young people acquiring skills to establish farms elsewhere, farmers supplying raw materials to processing units, and smallholders benefiting from improved ecosystem support. SEDC’s broader agro-development strategy emphasizes agriculture as a driver of food security, enterprise growth, and regional economic diversification. The initiative aligns with efforts to address Nigeria’s food production challenges while creating opportunities for youth and rural communities.
