Nairobi is the epicentre of Kenyan politics, and anyone who captures City Hall automatically places himself at the centre of a national political conversation that stretches far beyond the county. The capital is home to 17 constituencies, millions of voters, the national government, corporate Kenya, the media, and some of the country's most influential political networks.
A politician who rises to become Nairobi governor therefore acquires a platform that can potentially become a launchpad for national politics, including a future presidential bid. That explains why the governor's seat is fundamentally different from an ordinary county position.
It is a political prize that can transform the fortunes of whoever holds it. Yet despite the enormous stakes, many of Nairobi's MPs have preferred the relative security of their constituencies over risking everything in a countywide contest.
Three sitting lawmakers, however, have chosen to think differently. Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, and Embakasi North MP James Gakuya are all positioning themselves for the Nairobi governorship in 2027, effectively declaring that their ambitions are no longer confined to their parliamentary constituencies.
Ronald Karauri Wants The Whole Of Nairobi ¶
Ronald Karauri has perhaps made the boldest jump because he is a first-term MP who does not appear interested in spending another five years simply defending the constituency he won in 2022.
Karauri entered Parliament as an independent candidate and became the first MP for Kasarani under the current constitutional dispensation to serve without the constituency having previously been represented by a returning incumbent. Instead of treating his parliamentary seat as the destination, however, Karauri is positioning himself for the bigger Nairobi prize.
His political calculation is particularly interesting because Kasarani is one of Nairobi's largest constituencies, giving him an established electoral base from which to begin a countywide campaign. Rather than concentrating his political energy on defending that territory, he is seeking to expand it from one constituency to all of Nairobi.
Karauri also brings a background that separates him from many career politicians. Before entering elective politics, he worked as a pilot with Kenya Airways and eventually became the Chief Executive Officer of SportPesa, giving him experience in aviation, business, and sports management.
He studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nairobi before leaving his course to pursue aviation training and later obtained an Airline Transport Pilot Licence from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority.
His time at SportPesa also gave him considerable visibility in Kenya's sporting world, with the company becoming involved in sponsorships and sporting activities across the country.
That combination of business experience, sports visibility, and parliamentary politics gives Karauri a political profile that is different from the traditional Nairobi politician. The challenge now is whether that profile can be converted into the grassroots machinery required to compete across all 85 wards.
Babu Owino Is Trading Parliament For City Hall ¶
Babu Owino's decision to pursue the governorship is less surprising because his political career has increasingly extended beyond Embakasi East and into national political debates. The outspoken MP has built a powerful profile from Embakasi East, where he has served multiple terms, while becoming one of the most visible parliamentary voices in the country.
His supporters point to his parliamentary record and constituency activism as evidence that he has outgrown the traditional role of an MP, and his decision to target City Hall represents an attempt to translate that political visibility into executive power.
Babu is not positioning himself merely as a candidate who wants another parliamentary term; he is attempting to move from representing one constituency to running an entire county.
His preparation has also gone beyond public declarations. Babu has moved to establish The Mwananchi Party as a political vehicle, giving his gubernatorial ambition an organizational structure rather than leaving it as another political announcement. That is significant because Nairobi politics is ultimately about numbers, organization, and alliances.
A governor must appeal to voters across constituencies with very different political interests, ethnic compositions, economic realities, and local power structures. Babu's greatest political test will therefore be whether the energy and visibility that have made him a major figure in Embakasi East can be reproduced across the rest of Nairobi.
The governorship demands a much wider coalition than a parliamentary seat, and Babu's move means he now has to prove that his political brand can travel beyond his traditional base.
Gakuya Brings the Old Nairobi Political Machine ¶
James Gakuya brings something neither Karauri nor Babu can replicate: decades of direct experience inside Nairobi's political machinery. Gakuya has represented Embakasi North since 2013 after spending more than a decade as a councillor in the former Nairobi City Council.
His political journey therefore stretches back to the days when Nairobi was administered through the old municipal system, giving him an understanding of the city that predates devolution. He subsequently moved into Parliament and has been re-elected in every general election since first winning the Embakasi North seat.
Before entering elective politics, he worked in both public and private institutions, including Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company and Makomboki Tea Factory, and later obtained a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Kenya Methodist University.
That history makes Gakuya's gubernatorial ambition particularly significant because he is not a newcomer attempting to discover Nairobi politics from scratch. He has spent years building relationships within the capital's political structures and understanding the networks that determine how Nairobi politics works.
His challenge, however, is equally obvious: political longevity in one constituency does not automatically translate into countywide support. To win the top seat, Gakuya would have to take the political networks he has accumulated over decades and extend them into every corner of Nairobi. His campaign would therefore be a test of whether experience and established political machinery can be converted into a countywide mandate.
Nairobi's Old Guard Is Keeping Its Distance ¶
The emergence of these three MPs also exposes something fascinating about Nairobi politics. Some of the capital's most recognizable parliamentary figures have accumulated considerable influence without making an aggressive move for City Hall.
Ruaraka's TJ Kajwang' and Mathare's Anthony Oluoch, for instance, remain important voices in Nairobi and national politics, but they have not placed themselves at the centre of the 2027 gubernatorial contest in the same way as Karauri, Babu, and Gakuya.
That caution could be deliberate because running for governor is fundamentally different from defending a parliamentary seat. An MP needs to win a constituency. A gubernatorial candidate has to build a coalition across the entire county while surviving intense competition from political parties, business interests, ward-level politicians, and national political formations.
That is why the three MPs who have stepped forward deserve attention. They are not simply announcing another political ambition; they are voluntarily abandoning the comfort of constituency politics and entering a contest that requires a completely different level of organization.
Their decisions also demonstrate how the Nairobi governor's position has grown into a major political launchpad.
A successful governor does not operate in a political vacuum. The office places its occupant at the centre of national attention, gives them direct responsibility over one of Kenya's most important urban economies, and creates relationships with thousands of local political actors.
For ambitious politicians, those advantages make City Hall a potentially powerful stepping stone.
The Battle Is Bigger Than Replacing Sakaja ¶
The 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial contest is therefore unlikely to be simply about who succeeds Johnson Sakaja. It is about who can build the political coalition required to control Kenya's capital at a time when Nairobi remains one of the most important battlegrounds in the country's political calculations.
Karauri is attempting to move from business, sports, and a first parliamentary term into county leadership. Babu Owino is trying to transform a strong parliamentary profile and grassroots political machine into executive power.
Gakuya is attempting to turn more than two decades of Nairobi political experience into the county's top office. Their paths are different, but their destination is the same.
What makes the contest particularly interesting is that all three have already demonstrated something that many Nairobi politicians have been reluctant to do: they are willing to think beyond their constituencies.
Nairobi has 17 MPs, but the governor has to answer to the entire county. That requires a completely different political imagination. The three lawmakers have therefore placed themselves in a difficult but potentially transformative political race.
They have moved from asking voters in their constituencies to renew their parliamentary mandates to asking millions of Nairobi residents to entrust them with the leadership of the entire capital. Whether their political bases can expand far enough remains the central question, but their ambitions have already changed the conversation around the 2027 Nairobi governor's race.
