Kindiki, Kalonzo and Muturi Face Chaos as Political Violence Erupts in Embu and Garissa

Former Attorney General Justin Muturi has described an attack on opposition leaders in Garissa County as an attempted assassination, demanding an immediate police investigation into the incident.

Muturi condemned the Saturday, September 12 attack, warning that violence targeting political leaders could fuel fear, deepen political divisions, and undermine Kenya’s democratic space.

“This is an attempted assassination! The attack on opposition leaders in Garissa is a grave matter that must not be taken lightly,” Muturi said in a post on X.

Political violence is becoming a dangerous feature of Kenya’s politics, with opposition leaders attacked in Garissa and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki chased away by goons in Embu.

Muturi Demands Police Action

The former Attorney General called on Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to immediately investigate the incident, identify those responsible and ensure that anyone found culpable is arrested and prosecuted.

Muturi said attacks against political leaders should not be dismissed, warning that political violence could create fear among Kenyans and further divide the country.

He also insisted that members of the Wantam Movement would not be intimidated or silenced by the attack.

“We in the Wantam Movement will not be cowed, intimidated, or silenced,” Muturi said.

He added that the movement would continue pushing for democracy, justice and peace while defending the constitutional right of Kenyans to participate freely in the country’s affairs.

“Kenya belongs to all of us. We will continue to stand for democracy, justice, peace, and the right of every Kenyan to participate freely in our country’s affairs,” he said.

Youths Attack Opposition Rally

The incident occurred as Nyali MP Mohamed Ali addressed supporters in Garissa alongside Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

About 50 youths, operating in different groups, reportedly began pelting the gathering with stones, forcing opposition leaders and their supporters to seek safety inside vehicles.

Several vehicles were damaged during the chaos, including Muturi’s vehicle, whose windscreen was reportedly partly destroyed.

The situation later returned to normal after the security detail attached to the opposition leaders intervened and dispersed the youths.

The rally brought together several opposition figures, including Kalonzo, DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa, Muturi, Kathiani MP Robert Mbui, Embakasi South MP Julius Mawathe and Mohamed Ali.

Opposition Leaders Warn Against Political Violence

Mohamed Ali condemned the disruption and warned against involving young people in political activities that could descend into violence.

Kalonzo similarly urged Garissa residents to maintain peace and resist attempts by politicians to use them to advance personal interests.

Muturi said political disagreements should be settled through constitutional and democratic channels rather than violence.

“If you have any opinion, our Constitution guarantees you the right to say whatever you want to say and associate with any Kenyan,” he said.

The Garissa incident comes as opposition leaders intensify grassroots mobilisation across the country ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The group has been touring different regions, including Coast counties, Garissa and Tana River, as it seeks to expand its political networks and build support beyond traditional opposition strongholds.
