On September 9, 2019, a dramatic scene unfolded in Murang'a, Kenya, as Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro was arrested for causing chaos in a church event.
According to eyewitnesses, Nyoro stormed the Gitui Catholic Church, where nominated MP Maina Kamanda of the Kieleweke group was presiding over a fundraiser, and demanded to take over the function because it was in his constituency.
Local youth shielded Nyoro as he attempted to leave the church, and he was eventually driven away in a car. The incident sparked widespread condemnation from local leaders, including Area Bishop Rt Rev James Wainaina, who urged politicians to maintain decorum.
"The act of orchestrating chaos and disturbance at any place is a criminal offense and it is more regrettable when such an act is committed within the precincts of a house of worship," the police commander, Josphat Kinyua, warned.
Nyoro, a vocal member of Deputy President William Ruto's Tanga Tanga group, was arrested hours later, on live television, and was taken into custody. His arrest was quickly condemned by leaders from his Tanga Tanga group, including Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen.
