On September 9, 2019, Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko announced the start of renovation work on City Stadium, a 10,000-seater facility, through his official Facebook page.
According to Sonko, the rehabilitation of City Stadium is underway to ensure the historic stadium is upgraded to the required standards.
He also shared a 15-minute video and 10 photos showing county workers repairing the stadium's terraces to his million-plus followers on the social networking site.
“Rehabilitation of City Stadium is underway to ensure the historic stadium is upgraded to the required standards,” said Sonko.
As part of his administration's efforts to promote sports through infrastructure development, Sonko also announced plans to unveil Dandora Stadium soon after its completion and construct three other stadia in Ziwani grounds (Kariokor), Ndurarawa (Riruta), and Kihumbuini (Kangemi) in the current financial year.
A spot-check by Nation Sport confirmed that renovation work on City Stadium had started, although Sonko's office remained mum on the time it will take to complete work on the stadium.
For Gor Mahia treasurer Sally Bolo, the renovation work is welcome news, as the club spends at least Sh100,000 each weekend to transport its team to matches in Machakos or Kisumu due to the stadium's poor condition.
