Published on September 10, 2019, a wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa has led to the planned repatriation of at least 600 Nigerian nationals.

Nigerian Consul General in Johannesburg, Godwin Adamu, confirmed that two flights will be used to transport the citizens back to Nigeria.

"They are about 600 now," Adamu told AFP, adding that the first flight will carry 320 Nigerians, with a second flight to follow immediately.

Reports indicate that at least 10 people were killed in the violence, with scores wounded and hundreds of foreign-owned shops looted and burned down.

According to Adamu, the estimated number of Nigerians living in South Africa is over 100,000.

Retaliatory attacks against South African companies in Nigeria led to the temporary closure of South Africa's diplomatic missions in Lagos and Abuja.
