On September 9, 2019, a devastating road accident occurred on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway near Delamere Farm in Naivasha, claiming the lives of three people and leaving 15 others injured.
The accident involved a Nissan matatu and a private minibus carrying students, which was heading to Nakuru from Naivasha. The matatu driver attempted to overtake a fleet of vehicles before ramming into the oncoming minibus, resulting in a major traffic snarl-up.
According to eyewitnesses, the highway has seen an increase in accidents in recent months due to the rising number of vehicles using the road. They called for the expansion of the highway to prevent such incidents in the future.
Naivasha police boss Samuel Waweru confirmed the accident, stating that the injured were receiving treatment at the sub-county hospital. He attributed the accident to careless overtaking.
This incident is not an isolated case, as six people died on the same highway just last week in an accident involving a Nissan matatu and a lorry.
