On September 9, 2019, students at Multimedia University in Kenya took to the streets to protest after one of their colleagues was seriously injured by a matatu.
The incident occurred at the university's main entrance, where a first-year student was hit by a matatu last week.
According to the students, the police failed to act promptly after the incident, which further fueled their anger.
The students also claimed that matatus belonging to the Ongataline sacco have been overcharging them and harassing them.
"We would like to warn Ongataline that this is the last time they will be harassing us. You cannot tell us the fare is 50 bob then later change to 100 bob and if we refuse to pay the 100 bob you make us alight the vehicle before reaching our destination," one of the protesting students said.
Anti-riot police were deployed to disperse the protesters, but the situation escalated with the officers throwing teargas at the students, who retaliated by hurling stones at them.
