On September 9, 2019, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's plan to suspend the UK parliament took effect, sparking controversy ahead of Brexit.

According to Johnson's spokesman, the suspension, also known as prorogation, began late Monday, despite a government-led vote on holding a snap election next month.

"Parliament will be prorogued at close of business today," the spokesman said, using the parliamentary term for the suspension.
