This archive report was first published on 9 September 2019.

On September 9, 2019, Nakuru governor Lee Kinyanjui issued a stern warning to traders who package Irish potatoes in extended bags, exceeding the 50-kilogramme limit.

The move aims to protect farmers from unscrupulous traders who buy potatoes cheaply in bulk, then repackage them into smaller units for profit.

According to Kinyanjui, the county will not tolerate such businesses, and vehicles transporting potatoes in extended bags will be impounded, with owners detained.

The county is working to promote local products, including potatoes, and has partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture to classify potatoes similarly to maize in terms of purchasing.
