A man, identified as Bobby Kariuki Kimani, was arrested on September 5, 2019, in Kileleshwa, Nairobi, after being found with fake currency notes worth KSh200 million.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect was found with a stash of US dollars, Euros, and Pounds in his possession.
On September 4, 2019, other suspects, including a Nigerian and a Congolese national, were arrested in Yatta, Machakos County, with fake currency notes worth KSh1,000.
Police discovered chemicals that the suspects had used to create the fake notes after residents of the area raised complaints.
It is alleged that the suspects had been circulating the fake money in the Kakumini village.
Under the Penal Code, Section 367(a), anyone found guilty of possessing fake currency notes faces up to seven years in prison.
The circulation of fake currency notes has increased as the Central Bank of Kenya prepares to phase out old currency notes by September 30, 2019.
