On September 7, 2019, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested five individuals, including Principal Magistrate Edga Kagoni, over the reckless handling of exhibits that led to the loss of approximately 10 kilograms of heroin valued at Ksh30 million and cash of various currencies worth over Ksh600,000.
According to a tweet by the DCI, the suspects were arrested following the incident, with Kagoni being picked up at Kilindini Police Station and flown to Nairobi, where he is currently being held at the Chief Magistrate court at the JKIA court.
On September 9, 2019, Magistrate Rueben Nyakundi issued conservatory orders for Kagoni's immediate release on a Ksh20,000 cash bail or a Ksh100,000 bond with a similar surety amount.
The court's decision has left many wondering whether Kagoni will be charged in Mombasa Courts, Shanzu Courts, or Nairobi.
