On September 9, 2019, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) issued a directive that all retailers and transporters of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) must obtain licenses for their businesses.

The new regulations aim to curb unauthorized LPG cylinder filling, making marketers directly accountable for accidents caused by LPG gas leaks, including compensating victims.

According to section 99 of the Petroleum Act 2019, breaching the regulations will lead to a Kshs 10 million fine or five-year imprisonment upon conviction.

However, the Consumer Federation of Kenya has expressed concerns that the new regulations will cause a shortage in the market by restricting business to the brand's dealers, such as petrol stations, leading to monopolistic competition.
