Published on September 9, 2019, a speech by veteran politician Mangosuthu Buthelezi in Johannesburg was disrupted by a rowdy crowd.
Buthelezi, a Zulu leader during apartheid and former leader of South Africa's opposition Inkatha Freedom Party, was heckled throughout his address.
He had come to the city as a mediator to quell tensions following a recent wave of deadly riots and xenophobic attacks.
At least 10 people, two of them foreign nationals, had been killed in the violence over the last week.
Buthelezi expressed his shame over the recent violence, saying it was tarnishing the name of South Africa across the continent.
However, his words fell on deaf ears as crowds walked out of the meeting, with some chanting "foreigners must go back to where they came from".
The unrest had subsided by Thursday, with police reporting over 420 arrests.
