On September 8, 2019, Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Paul Makonda made headlines with a surprising announcement.
During a Sunday service at a worship centre in Kawe, Dar es Salaam, Mr Makonda stated that religious leaders can preach in night clubs in the capital.
He revealed that his regular visits to night clubs had shown that Tanzanians were having fun without observing the existence of God.
“Servants of God who want to preach in night clubs are allowed to do so, at least for half an hour to take the word of God to the citizens. They shouldn’t say they were unaware; follow them there,” he said.
Mr Makonda further stated that he did not expect any objection and that effective from the next week, religious leaders would be allowed to preach for at least 30 minutes in nightclubs.
